The basic task is to construct a wetland for the purpose of wastewater treatment before the water is directed into the Yamuna. Since informal settlements are strewn all around the Yamuna floodplain in Delhi, we intend to use the $6500 San-Kranti grant to get a pilot project going at one of these sites, and monitor its efficacy over time in ensuring the quality of the water entering the Yamuna. The plan is to engage local students and neighbourhood kids in sample collection and experimentation, and have a relevant institution as apex coordinator to manage the database of wetland quality indicators.
January and February will be the crux of our learning curve, meeting stakeholders, meandering through land use policy jargon, reviewing potential sites, and churning out the financial plan. March will involve site visits and lab work, and mediating the institutional partnerships. During April and May we hope to get done with the construction and decide on the timetable for monitoring.
